There has been a lot of information coming out about the show’s “reset” on September 26th. We’ve heard about returns, exits, new sets, and a change in storytelling. Hall tells us that there have also been some changes in her character since we last saw her two and a half years ago. Hall explains that this “was time she spent protecting her husband and saving his life. So when we return in September, what you see is a couple who is so deeply bonded. Deidre Hall Confirms Days of Our Lives Return

"It's a brand new Days of Our Lives," Hall told the show. "We are turning back the clock to the days when you used to love the show."

Hall was written off Days in 2009 with Drake Hogestyn (John) due to severe budget cuts. During her two years away from the show, the daytime medium has continued to deteriorate. Both Guiding Light and As the World Turns went off the air and, this year, All My Children and One Life to Live were canceled by ABC. Yet, Hall believes there is still a market for the genre.

"There's a place for daytime drama in our lives," she contended. "We are your family. We're there when you are sick, when you are lonely, when your own family didn't show up... We are there in your home with you. There's a hunger for that."

Hopefully, hungry fans will tune in in droves to watch her return
to Days.

From Daytime TV to Daily Health: Local woman, Daytime Star Friend, Create Book

Television actress Deidre Hall (left) looks for ingredients with Lynne Parmiter Bowman of Pescadero for their "Genius Soup" at the Coastside Farmers Market. Hall and Bowman recently published a cookbook together entitled "Kitchen Closeup" featuring simple and healthy recipes.

For 40 years, Pescadero resident Lynne Bowman and her good friend, Deidre Hall — Dr. Marlena Evans for three decades on NBC’s “Days of Our Lives” — would sit in each other’s kitchens, jot down recipes, and share friendship, straight talk and laughter.

“(Lynne) walked in and we started laughing and haven’t stopped,” said Hall, an attractive blonde with a down-to-earth and warm persona.

Out of those kitchen-table confabs came “Deidre Hall’s Kitchen Closeup (fast, frugal, fabulous food secrets)” (Bowman Hall, $12.95), a deceptively modest booklet packed with straight-talk dietary wisdom, fact-based insight, tips for what to (or not) eat, must-haves for kitchen and pantry and tempting recipes, served up for the reader with common sense and over-tea-at-the-kitchen-table coziness.

The two think as one, in person and on paper.
“Sudden streams of ideas …” said Hall of their visits.
“Something everyone needs to know,” Bowman finished.

“It’s a great read even if you’re not in the kitchen,” said Hall. “Laugh a lot, smile a lot, learn a lot.”

Over coffee and scones at La Di Da on Saturday, as Southern California resident Hall visited the Coastside and her friend, the two women, united in health and humor, looked back.

While playing Dr. Evans on “Days of Our Lives” for 32 years, Hall broke daytime television ground with guest appearances on “The Tonight Show,” a Bob Hope Special and “20/20” to talk about the birth of her son to a surrogate mother. She created the Jessie Witherspoon character for the family drama “Our House,” starred in numerous Movies of the Week, has graced best-dressed lists and the cover of People magazine and guest-hosted daytime talk shows.

Off screen she became a spokeswoman for the National Alzheimer’s Association, was nominated for three Emmys, received two People’s Choice Awards, contributed to numerous charities and inspired “What are fans of the most popular soap star called?” “Deidreholics!” for Trivial Pursuit.

Planning to speak on health and beauty in Australia in July, Hall and Bowman decided to put their kitchen-table scribblings into a book to take along. “Kitchen Closeup” came together in six weeks, and is now available on amazon.com and at Toque Blanche. Bowman hopes to put it in local bookstores; in October, Hall will take it to New York talk shows.

Hall quickly, and wryly, points out that the book “isn’t what people expect from a soap-opera diva” and that “it isn’t a celebrity cookbook. It’s a lifestyle book.”

Following the idea of “Eat food. Mostly plants. Not too much” as quoted by “The Omnivore’s Dilemma” author Michael Pollan, the authors give vegetables, fruits, grains and lots of water a thumbs-up on their “what to eat list” and artificial ingredients, produce coated with pesticides and high-fructose corn syrup a thumbs-down. They discuss carbs, calories and “clean” produce, list supplemental reading and suggest “How your food day looks.” They promise that your well-stocked kitchen and pantry will have enough to whip up any healthy meal for your family.

The recipes span breakfast to desserts, with revelations (who knew that pineapple can heal?) and blockbusters like “Genius Vegetable Soup” you can make different every day while stretching the budget and boosting morale: “This recipe is not just for soup, it’s about communicating love.”

“We want to teach, never preach,” Bowman said.

Their key, they said, is making a conscious lifestyle choice. “We’re going so fast, juggling so many jobs, that the people who come last are ourselves,” Hall said. “If you’re going to be in a rut, this is the rut to be in. You will put meals on the table that are time-effective, cost-effective, beautiful, and wonderfully healthy.  It’s as easy to feed our families consciously as it is to feed them from a drive-through. The difference is the length and quality of your children’s lives.”

The pair say they hope this is the first book of many. Future plans include similar books for and about men, singles, seniors, younger cooks and those who love locally grown foods.

“We have this momentum,” Bowman said. “We’re talking about food, and people understand different local foods.   We’ll even start taking about small, local farms.”

A Tribute To a Great Lady

While attending a fundraiser for Iraq Star, an organization of plastic surgeons who provide free corrective surgery for our soldiers, I had the unspeakable pleasure of meeting a true hero. Captain Leslie Smith was injured in an IED explosion while serving in Iraq. She has been through multiple surgeries and has done so with grace, dignity, and gratitude. She is pictured here with her guide dog.
